Later in life, Ronnie left home to embark on a career with the U.S. Marine Corps. He returned home with an honorable discharge. Ronnie continued to work and further his education, attending local colleges in the Chicagoland area. He was a multi-talented individual; writing poetry, as well as, composing music. He was a talented instrumentalist learning both the keyboard and drums with no formal training. He enjoyed jam sessions with local bands and also the occasional street performance.
