Bennie McGee Jr. Obituary

Bennie “Bum” McGee, Jr. was born in Greenwood, MS on April 15, 1945 to Sallie Myers and Bennie McGee, Sr., who preceded him in death.  Bennie passed away on July 1, 2019.

Bennie moved to Chicago, IL at the age of 13.  He attended Dolittle and Mosley Grammar School and Dunbar High School.  He played on the SR Noveles Softball Team from Lake Park, Ida B. Wells, and Ellis.

Bennie was one of ten children; Willie, Charlie, Robert, Jo, and Phillis preceded him in death; a son, Kevin Bogan, who also preceded him in death; and two grandchildren.

Bennie joined the Marines in the Spring of 1968 until 1972.  He received a Purple Heart in  Vietnam, and other medals.

Bennie’s first job was with Chicago Furniture Co delivering furniture.  In addition, he also worked for Baldwin Ice Cream Co. delivering ice cream, Laylaw School Bus Co., Shears Bus Co., Durham Bus Co., and Positive Connection School Bus Co., where he retired in 2011.

Bennie loved music; he was known as  “DJ Sweet B.”  He also loved bowling, fishing, dancing, and going to the Casino playing Black Jack.

Bennie reunited with his wife, Neese, on February 5, 1999, and later married in August 2013.

Bennie leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Jeannetta Russell-McGee; four children, Bennie McGee IV of Chicago; Sharon Blackman (Ernest) of Chicago; Rochelle Bogan of Minnesota; and Samantha Bogan of Chicago; two step-daughters, Arlisa Pendleton of Chicago; Gabrielle Howard (Tony) of Whitsett, NC; five sisters, Sarah, Betty, Alberta, Elizabeth, all of Chicago; and Bobbi Hester (Phillip) of Alsip, IL; one brother, Thomas of Joliet; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law, Vera Douglas, Addie Dorsey of Chicago; Donnetta Gardner (Albert) of Gary, IN; Audrey Johnson (Marvin) of Minnesota; 6 brothers-in-law, James Pendleton, Sr., Charles Pendleton, both of Kankakee, IL; Andre Pendleton of Utah, Jentle Pendleton, Jr., Dennis Pendleton, Sr., and Reginald Pendleton, Sr., all of Chicago; a host of nieces, nephews, 2 very good friends, Allen Cox (Ben), and Kim Bogan.
