Jerry L. Averhart, Sr. was born October 13, 1954 to Vera and C.D. Averhart; both preceded him in death.
Jerry accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of First Unity M. B. Church under the leadership of Pastor James C. Boyd and later became a member of New Faith M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Howard Randolph. He served as a Deacon at both.
Jerry served proudly in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 to 1977.
He was a very proud Unite States Postal Service employee (40+ years). As the Manager of the Vehicle Maintenance Facility (Chicago District), he was very proud of this team and their hard work.
During his first marriage, Jerry became the proud father of six sons; two sons, (Gary and Levon) preceded him in death.
Jerry met the love of his life, Mamie, and they were joined together in Holy matrimony in June 2008. They were blessed to enjoy years of marriage together sharing a special bond. Nothing can separate that bond, not even death. He was a very loving, caring, and devoted husband.
Jerry spent his lifetime helping others. He loved traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Jerry’s smile and laughter brought sunshine. He was loved by all and will truly be missed.
Jerry’s hobbies were playing pool, playing music, singing (praising God and serenading his wife), and working in his yard. Jerry also had a green thumb; he could grow plants were there were thorns. He was a magnificent cook and was lucky with the Illinois State Lottery.
Jerry’s brother, Wes, preceded him in death.
On Saturday, November 16, 2019, Jerry L. Averhart, Sr. was suddenly called to his Heavenly home.
