Dorothy Lee Johnson was born on September 28, 1930 in Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi to the late Repsie Lee Smith. Dorothy was reared by the late Olthia and Repsie Lee Smith.  Dorothy’s husband, Dave Johnson, Sr., preceded her in death as well as her siblings, Beatrice Lomax, Orlean Hicks, and Dr. William C. Mitchell.

At an early age, Dorothy accepted Christ and was baptized at the Mt. Moriah M.B. Church in Louisville, Mississippi where she was active in the Baptist Training Union.

After graduating from WCTS High School in Louisville, Mississippi, Dorothy re-located to Chicago in the late 1940’s.  It was important to her to unite herself with a church.  To this end, Dorothy joined the Sixth Presbyterian Church in Woodlawn under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev., Dr. A.L. Reynolds.  She served faithfully and subsequently participated in the merger of Sixth and Grace Presbyterian Churches in 1969, to which became the Sixth-Grace Presbyterian Church of Chicago.  Dorothy was a faithful member and active in the September Birthday Club for as long as she was able to participate.

On April 14, 1951, Dorothy married her high school classmate, the late Dave Johnson, Sr. They remained married for 57 years until his death in November, 2008. To this union, four children were born: Dave Johnson, Jr., Orlando Johnson, Repsie Royster and Keenan Johnson.

Dorothy loved the Lord. She spent time reading the Bible and praying daily. Dorothy placed her faith and trust in God throughout her life. She never gave up hope. Dorothy had a humble and gentle spirit. She was so sweet, kind and generous to everyone. Dorothy demonstrated “God is Love” by having love for everyone. She did not make judgement of any person.  Everyone was the same to her. Dorothy taught her children to love God, love people, and to forgive. She encouraged her children to seek God.

Dorothy was an avid reader of books and magazines.  She enjoyed cooking and baking sweets, dining out, shopping, and traveling. More importantly, Dorothy was family oriented and opened her house to anyone that wanted to come. There they could enjoy a good meal and conversation.

Dorothy will truly be missed by all! Mother, Grandma aka “Nanny”, Aunt Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories: four Children, Dave Johnson, Jr. of Merrillville, Indiana; Orlando Johnson, Repsie Royster, and Keenan Johnson all of Chicago; three Grandchildren, Chantelle Talmadge of Chicago, LaMarr Westley, and Miracle Royster of Chicago; five Great Grandchildren, Markell Talmadge of South Bend, Indiana, Alicia Talmadge of Chicago, DyMaria Westley of DeKalb, Illinois, Kireannah Westley and A’Driannah Westley both of Chicago; One Great-Great Grandchild, MiAire Jenkins of Chicago; One God Granddaughter, Morgan Ashley Craft of Milwaukee, WI; Sister-in-Law, Nina Mitchell of Chicago; Special Friends, Crystal Hopson and Alyce Battle; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and extended family whom loved her dearly.
