Alex McCray Obituary

Alex McCray was born December 16, 1930 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Ella Travis and Eli McCray. He passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois.

Alex, also known as “Buddy,” was a proud resident of Joliet, Illinois. He was baptized at an early age. Alex was a member of Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church in Joliet, Illinois.

Alex served in the Korean War and received a Bronze Service Star, along with receiving a United Nation Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge.

Alex was a former employee of Mancuso Cheese Company in Joliet, Illinois.

He was a long- time dedicated employee until his retirement. Even though he retired, he continued to be of service when needed.

Alex was among nine siblings. He loved family, he had seven children and three bonus children after joining in marriage to Louis McCray.

Alex is preceded in death by four siblings, James McCray, Emma Travis, Lizzie Lott, Lee Edward McCray; four children, Shirley McCray, Eloise McCray, Melvin McCray and Lisa McCray.

Alex leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife, Louise McCray; three children, Alex McCray Jr., Marlene McCray, and Pernell McCray; three bonus children, Milton (Stacey) Jones, David (Shavall) Jones and Maurice Jones and his special friend, Trish; four siblings, Jennie Myers, Sam (Francis) McCray, Barbara (Burnell) Turner and Dwight McCray; godson, Pastor Cornell (Melody) Ervins; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
