Our beloved Barbara Jean Stevenson was born on July 17, 1942, to Flord Stevenson Sr. and Mary (nee Wilson) Stevenson in Chicago, IL. Barbara was one of two children. She departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2024 at her residence.
Barbara grew up on the south side of Chicago. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and faithfully attended church service. Throughout her life she was a devoted Christian and even served as a member of her church choir. Upon moving to Joliet, she maintained her faithfulness to Christ and attended services until her health began to decline.
She attended Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, IL before studying at Kennedy-King College for one year. She also volunteered frequently with Catholic Charities (Head Start Program) for over 20 years.
Barbara was preceded in death by both of her parents; her brother, Flord Ray Stevenson Jr.; two sons, Wilton “Anthony” Carter and John Lathorn Carter; four uncles, Ray Wilson, Michael Wilson, Anthony Wilson, and Baby Gorge Anderson, as well as one aunt, Ina Wilson.
Barbara leaves her legacy of life to her children, Charles C. Carter Jr. (Gisela), Kenneth Carter (Terrlyn), Phyllis “Diane” Jackson, Phillip Carter, and Lavonta Carter; her grandchildren Daron “Boo” Carter, Brandon Carter, Alphonso Carter, Little Jhon Carter, Angel Carter, and Emanual Carter; bonus grandchildren, Katrina Lee (Corey), Terrell Jones (Hillary Jones), and Vincent Sanders. She is also survived by three aunts, Frankie Anderson, Gail Wilson and LaWanda Anderson and a host of other relatives and friends.
