Ben Washington Obituary

Ben J. Washington was born on August 28, 1945, to the union of Sellmon and Lovie Washington of Pickens, MS. He departed this life on September 23, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.

Ben moved to Joliet in 1966, where he spent the rest of his life. He retired from Stepan Chemical after 35 years of service, and he also drove for Crawford and Grand Prairie Bus Company for 32 years. He was a Deacon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sellmon and Lovie Washington; one son, Brian “Baby Boy” Washington; four sisters, Luzanne Flemings, Essie Lee Washington, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Catchings, and Willie “Dorothy” Jones; and three brothers, Booker T. Washington, Roosevelt Washington, and Simon Washington.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 46 years, Barbara Washington; seven children, Henry (Evelyn) Johnson, Kimberly (Andre) Barnes, Sherry (Mitchell) Shelby, Cedric Johnson, Ben (Debbie) Washington, Eric (Sharon) Washington, and Katina Washington. His legacy continues through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him joy and laughter throughout his life.

Ben touched countless lives with his generosity and wisdom. He enjoyed family gatherings, laughter with close friends, and the love that filled his home. He was a man of strength, kindness, and faith.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to his son Cedric, the Suncrest Hospice Team, Friendship Church, The Pearl of Joliet, Shiloh Baptist Church, his close friends Mrs. Lucy Moore, Pamela Hinton, Charles Jones, and Nathaniel Smith, and his special niece, Shirley Fleming.

Ben will be deeply missed, but he has gained his wings. His love, strength, and legacy will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
