Betty Gathing Obituary

Betty Joe Gathing was born January 12, 1950 in Byhalia, MS to the union of Reverend Samuel Gathing Sr. and Beatrice Bowen Gathing. She was the fourteenth child of fifteen children from this blessed union. Betty dearly loved all her siblings.

Betty grew up on a family farm where she contributed to the maintenance of the family home and farming of the animals and over 100 acres of land. Betty was an avid reader, expert stenographer, seamstress, participated in the Usher board, Sunday school teacher, known for her elegant style, generous heart, love for dance and for education. Betty attended and graduated from Henry High school of Byhalia, MS then proceeded to attend Blackhawk Junior College of Moline, IL, and the University of Missouri at St. Louis in St. Louis, MOwith her concentration in History. Betty even took interest in nursing school, but she began motherhood and gave birth to two nurses. Betty took pride in her dedicated work as a Unionized Bottler for Anheuser-Bush Brewing Company in St. Louis, MO for 30 years where she retired.

Her parents Reverend Samuel and Beatrice Gathing Sr. proceeded her in death. Siblings proceeding her in death include Robert Gathing, Samuel Gathing Jr., Alfred Gathing, Lloyd Gathing, Christine Garvin, Alberta Gathing, Cynthia Hoskins, Ruth Wilson, Iola Gathing, and Cozetta Jones. Her son Samuel Keita DeBoise and grandson John Edward James Jr. also proceeded her in death.

Betty was a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, sister-in-law, and friend. Betty was a member of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church of St. Louis, MO. On November 15, 2021 Betty departed this life into rest. Betty is survived by her husband Eugene Carl DeBoise Sr. (St. Louis, MO), beloved children Adjua Uganda Patrick (Kansas City, MO), Dr. Ghana Akua Ferguson (Crest Hill, IL), and Eugene Carl DeBoise Jr. (Norcross, GA), Cherished siblings- Roberta Wright (St. Louis, MO), Laura (Peggy) Gathing (St. Louis, MO), James Gathing (Marsha) (Chicago, IL), and Obadia Gathing (Kankakee, IL). Loving grandchildren Christopher Scruggs, Marquisha Trice, Natasha Scruggs, TohajieRaet, Dionna Patrick, Dion Patrick, Aaliyah Danee, and Mahari Ferguson, great-grandchildren Amari King, Ka’Mar McGruder, and Ka’Mad McGruder. Sister-in-laws Carmen DeBoise and Dorcas Redd-Davis along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
