Calvin L. Griffin was born on March 17, 1959, the second oldest of five children. He departed this life suddenly on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Renwick Nursing Home in Joliet, Illinois.
Calvin accepted Christ at an early age at Mars Hill Community Church of God in Christ in Joliet, Illinois. He graduated from Joliet East High School in 1976.
Calvin dedicated many years of service to the University of St. Francis, where he worked as a supervisor in the kitchen and loved serving people. He was known for his strong work ethic and for helping others find employment. If you needed a job, Calvin was the person to call. He not only helped people gain employment, but also trained and encouraged them to succeed in their positions.
As the only son, Calvin deeply loved his family and took pride in helping his sisters raise their children. He was a man of wisdom who not only gave advice, but also showed others how to achieve and provide for themselves. Calvin was not a man of many words, but his presence spoke volumes. You could feel his strength, love, and loyalty without him having to say a thing. His smile could light up a room whenever he saw the people he loved. He believed that if you start something, you must finish it and never give up. Calvin was truly a man of honor and respect.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Gloria and Uarl Hunter; his three sisters, Annetta Gray, Katrina Edwards, and Tyronda Hunter; and one nephew, Uarl Hunter.
Calvin leaves to cherish his memory his children: Toschan Johnson, Jessica Griffin, Calvin Griffin Jr., Tatiana Russell, Michael Houston, Khy Foulks, Joseph Griffin, and Gloria Griffin; his grandchildren: Rakiiya Allen, Amaya Ervins, Calvin Griffin III, Jaiden Griffin, Kaiden Griffin, Aiden Griffin, Aaron Griffin, A’Zyah Stevens, and Michael Griffin; one sister, Nichelle Hunter; one stepson, Michael Mackins; a special aunt, Rita Cole-Jones; a special niece, Tawanda Hunter; a special friend, Ketara Mortell; along with a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
