Calvin Woods Sr. was born on December 13, 1948 to Bill and Mary Woods, in Moorehead, Mississippi. He began his walk with Christ at an early age, and continued until being called home. He started his education in Mississippi, then came to Chicago in 1963, where he attended Burke Grammar School, Vincennes Middle School, and Dusable High School. He worked various jobs and coached youth basketball. Calvin loved working in home remodeling, which he continued for the rest of his life. Calvin was affectionately known as “Hawk” by family and friends. He deeply loved playing pool and participated in tournaments regularly. He enjoyed sports greatly, especially playing basketball. He enjoyed grilling, playing cards, and playing checkers. Calvin married Linda Baymon in 1995, gaining additional family, as well as a love of fishing and the Blues. Calvin was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a source of guidance and courage to others through his strong personality and self-determination. He always greeted you with a big smile, a hug, and a hello, and never left without saying “I love you”. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Robert (Bob), Sampson, & Eddie, sister Eldora, son Michael, son Martrice Sr., and two grandchildren. Calvin leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Linda Baymon-Woods; siblings A.C. Cephus (Nancy), Melvin Woods (Mary), and Ernestine Reed (Walter); his children Calvin Jr., Leona Hoy (Michael) of Atlanta, GA, Goldi Hillery, and Shurecca Baymon; grandchildren Steven, Essence, Calvin III, Casarah, Jason, Diamond (Shurecca), Di’Von, DiaVonni, Malachi, Elijah, Michael Jr., Jasmine, Diamond (Michael), Somorrah, Martrice Jr., Tiffany, and LaToya, and great-grandchildren; beloved cousins, and an abundance of nieces and nephews that adore their Uncle “Hawk”; special brother-in-law Joseph Aryitey; special decades long friend, Jimmy Lee; and a host of close family, in laws, and friends.
