Chaundra Bishop

To know, Chaandra Bishop must know a woman of extraordinary compassion, I’m waving purpose, infectious, laughter, and boundless curiosity. She believe life is meant to be embrace her hardly, and she encouraged everyone around her to say yes to new experience, meaningful service and enduring friendships the moments that matter most.

Born on August 16, 1986 in Chicago, Illinois to the loving union of Sylvia J. Thomas-Bishop and Nathan Bishop. Chaundra enter the world with the name, meaning bright, shining, and glittering, a fitting reflection of the light she would become to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her faith in God served as an unwavering anchor throughout her life. Guided by the example of her parents, she learned early on the importance of extending Christ-like love, compassion, and kindness to others, principles that was shaped every aspect of her life and service.

A lifelong scholar with an unsatiable curiosity, Chaundra graduated with scholarstic honors from Bennett Elementary School in 2000 and Morgan Park High School in 2004. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Quincy University in 2008. While her childhood dream was to become a cardiologist, returning home after college exposed her to the stark health disparities affecting black communities. That realization transformed her calling. Determined to create meaningful change, she earned her Master of Public Health from Western Illinois University in 2013 and devoted her career to advancing health quality.

Chaundra‘s passion for serving others led to an extraordinary career in public health. She served as Health Educator with the Adams County Health Dept, Director of Healthier Communities at the YMCA, Regional Community Health Plan Coordinator with United Way, and ultimately as a Regional Health Officer for the Illinois Department Of Public Health. Whether educating communities, building partnerships, or shaping public health initiatives, Chaundra believed that every person deserved access to the resources and opportunities needed to live a healthy life.

Her passion for equity naturally extended into public service. Believing that lasting change required both advocacy and action. Chaundra entered the political arena to amplify the voices of those too often overlooked. In 2020, she ran for Urbana County Corner on a platform centered around using community health data to better understand and prevent avoidable deaths. They unsuccessful in that election, her commitment never wavered. In 2021, she was elected as the first black woman to serve as Urbana‘s Fifth Ward, Alderwoman, a role she faithfully held until April 27, 2026. She also probably served as an At Large Delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention and as a member of the Planned Parenthood of Illinois, Board of Directors, continuing her lifelong mission of service and advocacy.

In 2016, at 29 years old, Chaundra was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. She met the diagnosis with the same courage and determination that defined every season of her life, declaring that she would "say yes" to all the good things life had to offer and that she would never allow cancer to define her existence and she kept that promise.

She became a nationally respected patient advocate, working entirely to improve access to clinical trials and quality oncology care while raising awareness for those living with rare cancers. She shared her voice with lawmakers, advocated on behalf of patients at the White House Clinical Trial Forum, and helped champion the proclamation, recognizing February as Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month in Illinois. Through her advocacy, she transformed personal adversity into hope for countless others.

While Chaundra dedicated much of her life to serving others. She also believed deeply in living fully. Her love of travel began at the age of 12 when she was selected for the People to People Student Ambassador Program, spending three weeks exploring, London, Wales, Scotland, and Southern Ireland. That experience brought a lifelong passion for discovering the world. Her adventures with later include studying in the Galapagos Islands, cliff jumping in Jamaica, hiking through the Costa Rican rainforest, and fulfilling a dream by meeting one of her favorite entertainers, Will Smith in London. Every journey reflected her adventurous spirit, and unwavering belief in saying yes to life‘s greatest experiences.

On May 12, 2018, Chaundra became a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated through the Epsilon Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Springfield, Illinois, where she was a actually known as "Starburst". After relocating to Urbana, she transferred to the Delta Omega Sigma Alumni Chapter where she faithfully served as a Chapter President from September 2024 through October 2025. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was more than an organization to Chaunndra, it was another avenue which she mentored, served, and uplifted women in her community.

Above every title she held, and every accomplishment she achieved, Chaundra treasured her family and the relationships she nurtured throughout her life. Her greatest joy was found around the table, sharing brunch, travelingg with those she loved, laughing into tears filled the room, and creating unforgettable memories. She possessed the rare gift of making strangers feel like lifelong friends and friends feel like family. Chaundra was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Sylvia J. Thomas-Bishop, her cherished grandmother, Lela, B, Thomas-Hunter, and her sweet puppy, Riley James.

She leaves the cherish her memory and continue her remarkable legacy;  her devoted father, Nathan Bishop, her loving sister, Anita Nicole Bishop, her brother, Brandon Nathan Bishop, her aunts, Mone Bishop and Eunice Abren (Clarence), her beloved fur baby, Bronzely Winston Bishop, her fur nephew Noki, Bishop; a host of cousins and countless treasured friends who became family through the love, kindness and light she so freely shared.

A life is not defined by its length, but by the love it gives, the life it changes, and the legacy it leaves. Chaundra gave us all three. She leaves behind cherished memories, and enduring legacy of service, and an invitation to each of us to continue saying "yes" to hope, to purpose, to compassion, and to a life fully lived.
