Curtis Lee “Sonny” Bass Jr., 74, of Harvey, Illinois, passed away peacefully in Matteson, Illinois, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, and love that will be felt for generations.
Born in Belzoni, Mississippi, Curtis began his life in the heart of Yazoo County before the Bass family journeyed north to Chicago’s west side. He later returned to Belzoni for his eighth-grade year, but it wasn’t long before he rejoined his family in Harvey, where he attended Thornton Township High School.
Curtis’s remarkable work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were evident early. At just 17, he began a 45-year career with Allied Tube, building a reputation for reliability and dedication. Never one to settle for a single path, he invested in multiple rental properties around Harvey and founded two successful businesses—Bass Landscaping and a Board Up company—each reflecting his drive to create opportunities and provide for those he loved. He also proudly served his community as a Deputy Sheriff in Harvey, Illinois.
A man of many passions, Curtis found joy in fixing cars from the age of 15, building race car motors, and drag racing. He was an avid boxing fan and had a keen eye for photography in his youth. These hobbies mirrored his vibrant personality: creative, fearless, and always curious.
Curtis’ greatest pride and joy, however, was his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Lee Bass Sr. and Rosie Howard-Bass and siblings Willie Harris “Brother” and Cloria T. Walker “Bay”. He is survived by his siblings Darlene, Fred, John (Judy), and Gwen. His children, Curtis L. Bass III, Antoine (Karlene), Shaqueta (Alex), Sheena (Glenn), and Clinton; grandchildren, Curissa, Kalya, Kalynne, Leon, Hadari, Aiden, and Alexander; and his great-granddaughter, Marissa. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, racing buddies, and friends.
Curtis “Sonny” Bass Jr. lived a life of purpose, passion, and resilience. His spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
