Debra Ann Matthews-Tates was the youngest of nine children. She was born January 18, 1958 in Yazoo City, Mississippi to Charlie B. Matthews and Carrie Matthews, both preceding her in death, along with siblings, Charlene Matthews and Charlie “Bartholomew” Matthews.
Debra Ann attended and graduated from Yazoo City High School. She made some life changing decisions, moves; but in 1983 with three children, she relocated to Joliet, Illinois, her forever home.
Debra’s sole focus was raising her children in a loving and stable home. In 1989, she went back into the workforce, starting her employment at Wal-Mart. She was a dedicated and valued employee for 32 years.
On June 9, 2009, Debra married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Andrew Lee Tates.
Debra Ann impacted many lives with her gentle, thoughtful and loving nature. She adopted many people and became their cheerleader, counselor, caregiver and chef. Her smile could brighten your day; her laugh infectious and her embrace, welcoming. She loved her Motown music, old movies, enjoyed dancing and above all, being with her family. To know her was to love her.
