Donald Eugene Hudson, age 96, formally from Joliet, Illinois, and also known as Boss, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, surrounded by loved ones following a period of declining health. He lived a long and meaningful life defined by dedication, integrity, and perseverance.
He was born on November 18, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, alongside his identical twin brother, David Lee to the union of Charles Sr. and Melzema (Stallion) Hudson.
Donald graduated from Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio, in 1948. It was a proud milestone that marked the beginning of a lifetime shaped by hard work and determination.
Donald joined his big brother Charles and cousins “siblings” in Kankakee, IL, in 1953. A few years later, Donald continued on life’s journey by moving to Joliet, IL.
A devoted husband, Donald was married to the late Bernadine McNeal Hudson for thirty-eight years. Throughout their life together Donald and Bernadine were actively involved in numerous clubs, organization and associations with priority on family, community, fellowship, and service.
He was employed by defense contractor Uniroyal Inc. at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant where his strong work ethic and dependability earned him the respect of his colleagues and upper management. Recognizing his leadership skills, Uniroyal promoted him to fire chief at the arsenal where he served for forty-two years. During that period, Donald established and built a highly successful career as a businessman and Black entrepreneur, most notably as the owner and operator of Joliet’s Sahara Lounge for forty-seven years.
A skilled negotiator and trailblazer, Donald expanded his business and began attracting nationally known R&B, blues, and jazz musicians such as Bobby Blue Bland, Charles Earland, and others to Joliet to perform at his establishment. This enabled his patrons to see musicians who normally performed before thousands of fans in packed concert halls across the nation.
Beyond his professional and community commitments, Donald Hudson embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He loved to travel and experience new places and cultures. A lifelong jazz enthusiast, he found comfort and joy in its timeless sound. He took great pride in owning a boat and cherished the time he spent cruising on the water.
Donald enjoyed relaxing at home watching old western television programs such as Gunsmoke; watching football, basketball and baseball games; and just being with family and friends.
Donald’s life was anchored by his faith and his family. He was a dedicated and longtime member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on various ministries especially the Men’s Ministry and Maintenance Ministry.
Seeking to be closer to his beloved family Donald requested to return home to Orrville, Ohio (he missed Illinois deeply). This move allowed him to cherish everyday moments and create additional lasting memorIes.
As a mentor to some and a father figure to others, Donald was known for his wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength. He leaves behind countless memories and lessons that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
Donald is survived by his nephews/nieces: Eugene Donald (Ruth) Howard of Orrville, OH; David Lee (Gladys) Thompson of Bowie, MD; Orlando Howard, James Bradley Sr. and Dinah McMillon all of Columbus, OH; Rosetta Nash of Orrville, OH; Eula V (Roman) Collier of Los Angeles, CA; and Clayton Hudson of Kankakee, IL.
