Dorothy Henderson

A Time To Be Born: Dorothy was born in the year of our Lord, 1937 (October 19), to the late Frank and Nettie Henderson in Leland, MS.

A Time To Live: Dorothy was affectionately loved by many as a long time resident of Memphis, TN. She also lived a couple of years in Tampa, FL before returning to Memphis, TN, until 1975, when she moved to Chicago, IL.  In Chicago, Dorothy began working as a cashier and later became a Certified Nurse Assistant.  She worked for many years as a CNA until she retired in 2006. She loved retirement life- going to church, visiting family and friends (local and out of state), and praying for many over the phone, especially her children and grandchildren.

A Time To Serve: Dorothy at an early age, with her mother and children, became a member of The General Assembly and Church of the First Born, in Memphis, TN, under the pastorate of Rev. Aaron D. Brewer, where she was a faithful member until relocating to Chicago. Dorothy followed and joined the Chicago area General Assembly and Church of the First Born, under the pastorate of Pastor William Burton, in 1975.   Dorothy became a born again Christian and served faithfully with her children at General Assembly Church for many years. As it was here, mother said, God operated on her enlarged heart without a knife and healed her.  (Dorothy also traveled for many years between Memphis and Chicago to convocations; and other places in between, serving the Lord and raising her children to sing and praise God wherever they traveled to or lived.) Dorothy later joined  St. James M.B. Church in Gary, Indiana, under the pastorate of Rev. Roosevelt Bradley, where she traveled faithfully the distance to Gary, Indiana until she decided to join her daughter more locally at ACME, in 2002. She remained a member at ACME (beloved evangelist, mother), under the pastorate of Bishop Bernard Sutton until her transition to glory.

A Time To Leave: When God calls, we must answer. He called Dorothy home May 28, 2024. Dorothy was raised with eight (8) other siblings, of which six preceded her in death (Inell, Frank, Lillie, Clarence, Caldonia, and James). She leaves a loving sister (Viola, 88) of Chicago, and the baby brother, Willie (lovingly called Uncle Red, 83) of Memphis, TN. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents,  to which were born a total of 21 children. However, verbal recollections denote that several, including sets of  twins, were either still born or died young (mostly before Dorothy was born).

A Time To Mourn: Left to cherish her precious life and legacy are her five (5) children: Thomas (Jackie) of Memphis, TN; Martha (James) of Orange, CA; Nettie (Tarel) of Corona, CA; Beatrice (Larry) of Chicago, IL and Shirley (Benny) of Marion, Arkansas. Dorothy also had two children to precede her in death…-Porter Dewayne (1968) and Joyce Ann (1977). 

Dorothy also will be missed by her 10 grandchildren (Sherwanda, Tami, Tinna, Tramaine, Thomas (Tumoni), Taren, Tamara (Keith), Tiffany, Tiana, Tia); 6 great-grand (Tamiia, Ricardo, Taliia (Johnel), Jordan, Aailyah, Braden), and 2 great-great- grandchildren recently born (Devonte and Gia). Also to cherish her memory are a humongous host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
