Elsie Yvonnie Ward

Elsie Yvonnie Ward was born on July 23, 1940 to Henry and Magdeline Portis in Memphis, Tennessee.  Elsie was the youngest of two children.  She and her brother Henry Jr. was a product of southern hospitality.  Elsie was a very beautiful, loving and mannerable child, with a gorgeous smile that would brighten up any room.

Elsie eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois where she met and married the love of her life, Mr. Albert Ward.  To this union, four handsome sons are born and Elsie showered them with so much love.  She did all that any loving mother would do, and she was even a neighborhood mother to many of their friends.  Elsie loved to cook meals and have family time with her boys. Elsie's husband Albert and three of her sons, Carlos, Cordell and Carmel all preceded her in death.

Elsie had a true love for people and life!  She loved to cook special meals and feed others.  She loved reading, watching game shows (Wheel of Fortune) was her favorite and having conversations with family and friends, reminiscing about the past and the good ol' days.  Elsie really touched the lives of so many people as a neighborhood mom when the family lived on 69th and King Drive; many years ago.

Elsie always held a very special place in her heart for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Elsie would do whatever she could for them and she would do it with love in her heart.  Elsie's grandchildren and great grandchildren could always depend on their NANNY.  They always put a smile on her face and her eyes would light up whenever they were around.

​Elsie spent a lot time giving and helping others.  Her loving and giving spirit was evident in the fact that she spend many years working as a private nurse.  Elsie lovingly tended to the needs of others, giving her best care to them.  Elsie cared for her patients as if they were a part of her own family, they knew they had someone to depend on when Elsie was there.

​Elsie's beautiful smile, kind heart, loving spirit and so much more will never be forgotten by those who were blessed to have her in their lives.  On September 11, 2021, God called Elsie home to takeover peaceful and eternal rest.  Elsie leaves to cherish her beautiful memories to her son and caretaker, Christopher Ward Sr.; five grandsons, Marlos, Anthony, Christopher Jr., Cordaryll and Cornelius; five granddaughters, Latoshia, Toshina, Natoshia, Courtney and Kyllea; 15 great grandchildren, Aniya, Beautiful, Christian,, Cordaryll Jr., Andrew, UJ, Ever, DaShawn, Marlynda, Maranda, Marsha, Mariana, Marlos Jr., Tania, Anita and a host of other relatives and friends.
