Gregory E. Warren, affectionately known as “Mookie” by his grandchildren and “Old Man” by his beloved wife Tamara, passed away on December 2, 2025, at the age of 76. He was born on October 10, 1949, in Joliet, Illinois, where he was raised and spent much of his life.
Gregory proudly served his country in the Vietnam War in 1968, first with the 27th Marines and later with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He participated in several major combat operations, including Operation Allen Brook and Operation Meade River. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (with Device 1960), and the National Defense Service Medal.
Gregory personally acknowledged December 2, 1967, as his “second birthday,” a solemn day marked by a tragic formation change in which a fellow Marine, standing in the exact spot where Gregory had been moments before, was struck and killed. This event shaped Gregory’s life and deepened his appreciation for every moment he had with his loved ones.
Service to country ran in Gregory’s family. His father, Curtis E. Warren, served in the U.S. Army, and his brother, Ruben Warren, served in the U.S. Navy during the same period, from 1967 to 1968.
He was preceded in death by his father Curtis and Margret Warren, daughter Mera (Meme) sister Janet Carradine, and brother Ruben.
Gregory is survived by his devoted wife, Tamara D. Warren, the love of his life whom he deeply cherished, and his children: Torreise (Reise), Kymberli (Kym), Gregory (Kardy), Savetra (Vee). Served by his siblings: Doreen, Jeff, Nina. And a host of nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of Ebony, Mark, Reggie, Jaelyn, Jalonn, Blair, Tim, Jaer, Tamere, Janiah, James (Boogie) Giona, Darin, Jonaia, Kene, Khari, Dimyri, Janus, Mykenna, and was blessed with many loving great-grandchildren and Godchildren who adored their “Granddad/Grampa Greg” Greg cherished lifelong friendships with childhood friends Greg Harris and Jerry Grangent, as well as countless battle brothers who were not only fellow warriors in combat but also warriors in Christ, sharing faith, camaraderie, and an unbreakable bond that lasted a lifetime.
Family was the center of Gregory’s world. He loved, protected, and cherished them with his whole heart. His legacy of strength, devotion, and love will continue to live on through every life he touched.
