Henry M. Mercer

Henry Mack (H.M.) Mercer was born December 7, 1935 in Pecks, Louisiana to Mr. and Mrs. Ruther and Alberta (Simon) Mercer.  He departed this life on August 21, 2024. It was in Peck, Louisiana that he was baptized at an early age at New Zion Baptist Church.

Henry moved to Joliet in 1954 where he joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. W. Hill.  He was a union construction worker for over 30 years when he retired in the early 90’s.

Henry was united in marriage to Helen Brass in 1956 and to this union three children were born: Edward, Annette and Flora Mercer.  He was blessed to also  be the father of daughter, Sonja Hoyle.

Henry was united in marriage to Mary Johnson in 1979 and to this union a son, Henry Mercer, Jr. was born and was blessed to embrace a bonus daughter, Angelique Johnson-Williams. 

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Ruther and Alberta Mercer, first wife Helen Brass-Randell, second wife Mary Mercer, son Henry Mercer, Jr, granddaughter Chandra Mercer, grandson Edward Lamarr Mercer, and sister Bertha Lee Mercer.

Henry leaves to cherish his memory: children Edward (Wilma) Mercer, Annette (Mark - deceased) Hendrix and Flora Mercer, Sonja Hoyle and Angelique (David) Johnson-Williams.  Henry also leaves two sisters: Margarett Baines and Alberta (Wilford) Green; five brothers, Ezell, Hosea (Sandra), Nobie (Regina), Roy and Paul Mercer, eighteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren along with special aunts, Vergie April and Zola Hamilton, special uncle Harvey Bennett all who will hold fond memories of Henry along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
