Reflecting on the life of James Curtis Harris Jr., affectionately known as "Curtis", a beloved musician, mentor, and friend, who left us on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the age of 66. Curtis was a passionate keyboardist/organist with an extraordinary God given gift. Curtis dedicated over 55 years of his life to the Church and God’s people, inspiring countless listeners and shaping the careers of many fellow musicians.
Curtis was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 18, 1958 to Elder James C. Harris, Sr. (deceased) and Mother Calitha Harris; he was the eldest child of three children. He attended Thornton Township High School. Curtis began his musical journey at a young age, he started on the guitar and quickly developed a love for keyboards. Over the years, he became known for his unique sound and anointing, if he heard it, he could play it. As a young child, Curtis attended St. James Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Jessie Campbell and his father, Assistant Pastor James C. Harris Sr. Curtis had an unwavering dedication to his church home established by his father, True Holiness COGIC and his love for God and God’s people. He has performed with numerous bands and choirs and recording artists. He relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1991 where he continued his faithfulness to God, his music and sharing it with God’s people. Upon settling in Atlanta, Georgia, Curtis joined Faith Walk Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Diane Collins. Gospel music was his favorite, but he enjoyed all music. He believed that music could heal the soul, he always played with his whole heart, mind, body and soul.
In addition to being a musician; Curtis was co-owner of his own tax service, Harris Tax Group and also a transportation company, JYB Enterprise LLC. Many remember Curtis for his style, humor, his big smile and big heart.
James Curtis Harris Jr. is survived by his wife, Yvette Harris; his daughters, Brianna Harris, Curtina Harris; his mother, Calitha Harris; brother, Pastor Carl Harris and sister, Janet Sutton (Arthur); brother-in-law, Leon Hall (Ann) and Lorenzo Hall (Angela); sister-in-law, Jeannette Hardeman (Lansing); uncle, Alphonso Harris; aunt, Corinea (Pastor Alfred E. Smith); nieces, Natasha, Nicole, Natrice, Natalie, Serena, Nikki, Kenyatta, Alyshia and Antionette; nephews, Carl Jr., Arthur, Jucari, Stephen, Savion, L.J., Leon III, Leshawn and Kaylan; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of extended family and friends who will forever carry the imprint he has made on their lives.
Curtis’ music, spirit, and his love for God’s people will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
