Janice Scott Obituary

Janice L. Scott was born on April 4, 1950 to the union of Charlie Lee Coats and Ethel Louise Alexander.  She began her education at William H. Brown Elementary on Chicago’s west side and furthered her education at Lucy L. Flowers Technical High School for girls.

Janice began her lengthy career path working at Illinois Bell as a telephone operator for a number of years.  Afterwards, she worked for Dean Witter and Chicago Urban League before settling in with Mount Sinai Hospital from which she retired in 2017.  In her younger years, she was active on bowling and volleyball teams, but she also loved the challenge of sales, assisting a friend in the sale of Afro Arts and later Bestline Cleaning Products.  She loved to help people, direct the young and old, and give hope where there’s none.

Janice confessed her sins and dedication to the church early on as her mother was a choir member and Sunday School Teacher with the Church of God.  She attended many different churches until she found her church home, Lighthouse Church of All Nations which she was invited to.  It was at this church she broadened her horizons and became a pastor, specializing in the children’s ministry. She used her former experiences being part of Toastmasters, an oratory club for public speaking to help ease into roles within the church and joined Ladies of the Light.

In 1969, Janice married Matthew McCombs and to this union one child was born, Malita Ann.  She later met and married Charles W. Scott and to this union Karlton D. Scott was born and she was rewarded with three bonus children, Debra Coleman, Charles Scott Jr. and Vernon D. Scott.

She is preceded in death by both parents, Charlie and Ethel; her husband, Charles W. Scott and son, Vernon D. Scott.

Janice went home to be with Lord on Monday, April 7, 2025 in Berwyn, Illinois.

She leaves to cherish her memory, Malita Collaso, (Christopher), Debra Coleman, Charles Scott Jr., and Karlton Scott; two brothers, Charles Alex Coats and Lamont Payton (Cassandra); 10 grandchildren who affectionately call her Grandma Scott; Khalil, Iyana, Vaneisha, Elaija, Karlton Jr., Presley, Omari, Cameron, Samiya and Caz.
