Jessie Young Obituary

On May 26, 1934 in St. Louis MO, a beautiful girl was born to the parents of Amos and Jessie Howell.  They names her Jessie after her mother, both parents and two brothers, Raymond and Henry Howell preceded her in death.

As a young child she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and was baptized.  She served and sang in the church choir and loved attending Sunday School at LaSalle United Methodist Church.

After graduating from high school, she continued her education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO.  In 1953 while working on her bachelor's degree, she pledged and was accepted into the Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Jessie was a very ambitious young lady.  She earned a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Development and then earned a Masters degree in Remedial Reading for Children.

On August 18. 1967, she was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Charles Young Jr., and to their union their beautiful daughter, Karen was born.  She preceded them in death.

In 1984 the family moved to Joliet, Illinois; they became members of St. Mark C.M.E> Church where Jessie sang in the choir and served in other ministries.

Jessie loved children, she was an elementary teacher in St. Louis, MO, Champagne, IL and Joliet, IL until she retired.

During her life she was committed to loving and supporting her grandchildren and great grandchildren and doing public service in the church and community.

She loved family and she loved entertaining family at her home for holidays or just because they were in town. Throughout her remaining years of life she loved people and she especially loved celebrating her birthday when her beloved family members came together to honor her with lots of love and laughter.

During 2015 the Lord called her husband, Dr. Charles Young, Jr. home to glory.

Later in 2017 she returned to St. Louis.

Jessie had a special gift from God of spreading love and laughter to anyone in her presence.

On August 30, 2024, she closed her eyes and her beautiful spirit transformed to the Heavenly Father to live in eternity. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Jessica Washington and Dewayne Washington, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Cierra Washington, Katriel Walters, Karielle Walters, Kyle Washington, Kapri V. Washington, all of Joliet, IL.

She also leaves behind her devoted niece and caretaker Theresa (Teri) Cobb of Lake St. Louis, MO, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear life, long friends.

HERSTORY was that while she lived in this world for 90 years, she gave herself to family, friends and community until her health diminished and even in that she loved everyone she came in contact with.

HERSTORY will live in our hearts and memories.
