John Allen Orr, affectionately known as "Eagle Man" was born in Los Angeles, California to Albert Wallace Orr and Ruth Evelyn Orr (nee Carr) on June 17, 1947 and departed this life on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at the Hines Veteran Hospital in Proviso Township, Illinois.
John proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged after faithfully fulfilling his duties. His time and service was a source of deep pride for him, and he carried that sense of honor and commitment throughout his life. His service to the United States Navy remain one of the honors he carried closest to his heart. During his active duties, he received the following medals and ribbons: Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, w/1 Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign w/Device.
Outside of his military service, John had a deep appreciation for knowledge and storytelling. He was an avid reader who found joy in exploring encyclopedias, emerging himself in classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries, and reading a wide variety of novels and love stories. Books were a constant companion to his life, reflecting his curiosity about the world and his enjoyment of thoughtful engaging stories.
John also had a special affection for cats and often found comfort in their quiet companionship. His gentle nature and appreciation for the simple joys of life were evident in how he cared for animals and people around him.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Wallace Orr and Ruth Evelyn Orr; siblings, Charles Wallace (Edith) Orr, Robyn Ann (Orr) Crandall and Phillip Branden Orr; nephew, James Orr and niece, Tammy.
He is survived by his sister, Ruth Elizabeth (Orr) Greathouse (Kenneth); his nephews, Jason Orr, David, and Peter (Mary) Greathouse; nieces, Katie and Hannah; his great-nieces and nephews, Isla and Cullen Greathouse, Denali, Lexi Brannen, and Rhys Orr; and devoted friends namely, Nayely Tapia, Jimmy Stanciel (who were his constant visitors), Shirley Daniels (who flooded him with delicious food), and Eugene McDaniel (his personal confidant and long-time dear friend).
John will be remembered for his quiet strength, thoughtful mind, love of reading and the gentle companionship he shared with those who knew and cared for him.
