Johnnie Mae Jones was born in Batesville, Mississippi on December 10, 1938 to Ella and Jimmy Green. She was the youngest of six children. Her parents and five siblings, Christine Brown, James Green, Estella Fox, Jack Green and Ollie Green, all preceded her in death. She was particularly close to her great nephews, Alvin Hicks, Orson Pegues and Christopher T. Davis, who also preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her family's fifth generation line. She passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at exactly midnight. Her nephew, Chris and niece, Teresa watched her take her last breath. She was 82 years old.
Johnnie grew up on a plantation in Jonestown, MS. When she wasn't in school, she was in the field with her family picking cotton, beans and corn. At the age of 17, she decided to pack up her things and move to Chicago, Illinois. There she held various housekeeping positions before retiring as a Supervisor after 20 years at the O'Hare Marriott Hotel.
Johnnie was a member of Carter Temple Church and went to church with her nieces, Joann and Christine whenever she was able. When she couldn't attend in person, she enjoyed watching sermons on TV. She also loved watching General Hospital, Young & The Restless, and has probably seen every episode of Law & Order at least three times.
For over 25 years, Johnnie lived with her niece, Joann Davis. She never had children of her own, so she took pride in helping Joann raise her children and grandchildren as if they were her own. She was everybody's favorite aunt, and everybody called her "Auntie" including her caregiver, friends of the family and people in the neighborhood. She was feisty, sassy and loyal....if anybody tried to mess with anyone in her family, she had no problems letting them know they would have to go through her first!
Johnnie leaves her closest relatives to cherish her memories; nieces, Joann Davis and Ernestine Brooks; great nieces, Christine Norris (Ralph) and Teresa "Gussie" Rice; great nephew, Christopher Davis and godson, Derrick Reed. She also leaves nieces and nephews (including great, great-great and great-great-great); Gloria, Shanda, Lucy, Jimmy, Angel, Andre, Chase, Cameron, Corey, Jerry, Tanika, Jaida, Skylar, Yogi, Michael, Dominique, Tatiana, Alvin, Camille, Tylan, Danielle, Avianne, Brianne, Keeya, Miera; her Clasberry cousins and a host of other family members and loving friends.
