Lady Simmons Obituary


Lady D. Simmons, was born July 30, 1924, in Columbus, Mississippi to the blessed
union of Mr. Early Hearie Lewis and Mrs. Cassie Ann Nellie Lee Gregory Lewis. Her
parents stressed the need for a firm Christ centered foundation and as a result, Lady D.
accepted Christ at the early age of 8 years old and was baptized in Columbus,
Mississippi.
At the young age of 18, Lady D. left home to explore the world. She briefly settled in
East Saint Louis, Illinois, where she worked at Berger’s pickle factory. She then relocated
to Chicago, Illinois in 1952, where she worked at Plastic Crest making jewelry boxes.
In 1958, Lady D. married the love of her life, Fred D. Simmons. She was a devoted and
loving mother and homemaker. She also had a calling to work for her shelf. She became
an independent sales person and entrepreneur selling Watkins products door to door. She
enjoyed interacting with people.
In 1959, Lady D. and Fred joined Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church and worked
faithfully together as Ushers and Greeters.
Lady D. lived a quiet, yet influential life. She enjoyed sports, specifically baseball and
basketball. She also enjoyed traveling.
Lady D. was an active member of The Red Hat Society. The Red Hat Society is a
chartable international society of women that connects, supports and encourages women
in their pursuit of friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness while supporting their
members in the quest to get the most out of life.
On Thursday, April 30, 2020, Lady D. was able to rejoin those who transitioned before
her, whom included her: parents, husband (Fred D. Simmons), brothers (Curtis Lewis,
William Lewis and Milton Lewis), sisters (Catherine Lewis and Lady Mae Lewis) and
children (James Earl Thompson and Fred D. Simmons Jr.).
Lady Dell’s memory will be honored and celebrated by her surviving family:
Daughters- Susie (m. George) Petty, Donese Thompson, Sherry (m. Brian) Stepp
Sons- Fredrick L. Simmons and Frankie L. Simmons
Sisters- Inez Jones and Lula Mae Hudson
Grandchildren- Ashley Nichole Stepp, Ursula Nicole Simmons, Arizona Dell
Simmons, Frank Simmons Jr., Phynix Cassie Simmons, Christian Simmons,
Janessa Huhn and Great Granddaughter- Angelique Huhn; and a host of in-laws,
nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends
