Laura L. Perkins, affectionately known as “Honey” was born October 4, 1928 to David and Annie Perkins, in Holmes County, Mississippi. She went to sleep in Christ on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at 5:24 A.M.
Mother Perkins moved to Joliet, Illinois in 1957 after visiting her best friend, Nebraska Davenport. They remained friends until Nebraska passing in August of 2018.
Mother Perkins was a Chef for many years, working at Spotty’s Restaurant for over 40 years. She also worked at Marty’s Restaurant for over 30 years.
Many days Mother Perkins would invite people for dinner and cook her “Special Mouthwatering Peach Cobbler” which she shared the recipe with many and taught her daughter and granddaughter how to duplicate her famous “Peach Cobbler”. She made a mean “Sweet Potato Pie” as well.
Mother Perkins loved her family and showed her love in many ways! She would “speak” her peace and “carry” her piece. Mother Perkins legacy of love, wisdom and cooking will be missed by many. Some of her stories would tickle your spirit and cause you to laugh and cry. Sleep on my dear and get your rest!
Mother Perkins was baptized in Jesus name and received the Holy Ghost at Christ Temple Church on June 23, 2011.
Mother Perkins loved “Gospel Music”, and would play it day and night, especially enjoying the late, Tim Jones Gospel Radio Station. Her favorite song was “Cooling Waters”, by the Williams Brothers.
Mother Perkins was preceded in death by her parents, David and Annie Perkins; four brothers, Willie (Lee Bertha) Stewart, Clarence (Geraldine) James (Lillie B.) and Cleotha Perkins; and one sister, Mary (Walter) White.
Mother Perkins leaves to cherish and honor her life: one son, J.T. (Cheryl) Ferguson of Waukegan, IL; one daughter, Corine (Tommy) Pitchford of Shorewood, IL; grandchildren, Harold (Carol) Ferguson of Park Forest, IL, Felicia (DeMario) Gore-Ash of Joliet, IL, Tamisha L. Morris of Geneva, IL and Tambitha (Cedric) Smith of South Holland, IL; great grandchildren, Randall Robinson, Jeremy (Ealiyah) Noel of London, England, Lashon Kependa, Seattle, Washington, Amber Gore of Joliet, IL, Heaven and Anissa Smith of South Holland, IL; great-great grandson, Erian Johnson; bonus daughters, Katherine Randall of Chicago, IL, Tammie McCann of Memphis, TN, Bernice Davenport of Joliet, IL; goddaughters, Yolanda Davenport, LaToia Russell and Jackie Latham of Joliet, IL; fifteen nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives, her Church Families and friends.
Interment immediately following the service at Elmhurst Cemetery, 1212 E. Washington Street, Joliet, IL 60433.
