Laurice Carter Williams was born on May 15, 1944 in Caledonia, Mississippi to the late Jessie and Gracie Lee Williams. She attended Rocky Valley School and later met Lonnie Clay McCollum in 1959 with whom she was united in marriage the same year. Following their union, Laurice relocated to Chicago where she received her CNA certificate. She was employed at the Child Rehabilitation Center in Harvey, IL. Laurice was an entrepreneur. She purchased her own home in 1975. She raised eight children as a single mother.
Laurice was baptized at Crossroad Baptist Church in Mississippi in her youth. She married Pastor Christopher Carter in 2003, taking on the position of First Lady at Macedonia Baptist Church. After Pastor Carter’s passing, Laurice went back to her home church, The Vinyard House of Prayer International, where she was baptized for the second time.
Laurice derives great pleasure from preparing elaborate meals for her loved ones. Her signature dish her classic fried corn. Laurice enjoys playing cards, fishing, visiting garage sales and going to the farm to pick fresh greens. Laurice is affectionately known as Sweet Reesy, Reesy or simple, Granny!
Laurice was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Gracie Lee Williams; her siblings, Bernice Harris Joann Craddieth, and Arnell Wells, and her grandson, Darnell Coleman Jr. (Baby D).
She leaves behind her devoted sister, Charlie Grace Turner (Arthur) and brother, Eddie Dean Williams (Tami).
Laurice Legacy lives on through her children; Brenda McCollum (Walter), Rickey McCollum (Nancy),Darnell McCollum (Letitia), Steve McCollum, Kenard McCollum (Nitira), Beverly McCollum, Ronnie McCollum (Yesenia) and Demetrius McCollum (Cody). A host of grandchildren,great grandchildren along with a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends.
