Lela E. Moffett was born on December 31, 1935, to Alfred and Sisley Ellis in Louin, Mississippi. She was raised with strong values of love, faith, and family that guided her throughout her life.
On April 16, 1957, Lela was united in holy matrimony to C.Z. Moffett. Together they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and devotion to family. She was known for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and the deep love she had for those around her.
Lela believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and openly confessed Him as her Savior. She was a faithful member of St. Mark C.M.E Church of Joliet, IL for many years, where she served diligently as President of the Stewardess Board. Lela believed in working faithfully in whatever task was placed before her and remained committed to serving both her church and community.
Throughout her life, Lela held several jobs and eventually retired from BorgWarner Automotive. She was known for her strong work ethic and dedication. In fact, she was rarely late except on days when the Chicago Bulls were playing.
On Saturday, March 7, 2026, Lela transitioned peacefully from this earthly life surrounded by her loving family. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, strength, and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Lela is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Sisley Ellis; parents-in-law, Carzell and Mayola Moffett; two sons, Raymond and Michael Moffett; two brothers, Alfred and Oree Ellis; three grandsons, Randy Moffett, Demetrius Moffett, and Phillip O’Large; close cousins, Maxine Boykin and Bonnie Smith.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory; her devoted husband of 68 years, C.Z. Moffett; her loving children, Renee Moffett, Vernice Moffett, Curtis Moffett, and Sheila Moffett; and two stepdaughters, Debra O’Large and Dennise O’Large. She is also lovingly remembered by her four sisters, Rosa Heard, Hazel (LeRoy) Endicott, Mildred (Jackie) Keene, and Sandra Chandler-Dillard.
She also leaves behind her cherished in-laws, Charlyne (Late Jacob) Moffett, Mary Reed, Geneva Burk, Ruby Ellis, and Carl Moffett, along with grandchildren; LaQuinta (Kevin), Vincent, Ryan, Jeremy, Tia, Jason (Eboney), Shanetria, JaColby, Juan, Ashley, Jevonte, Ivan, Cameron, Jamarion, Octavious, Hope, Shalamar, Heather, J.R., a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, special nieces and nephews, Sharon Mitchell-Banks, Donna Ellis, Jetson Mitchell, and Kevin Mitchell, many more nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her love and memory in their hearts.
