Leon Peter Smith Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 in the arms of his loving wife and family at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, Illinois.
Leon was born December 15, 1948 to the late Leon Smith Sr. and the late Snoria Lee Hill Smith in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Brother to the late Joseph Paul Leonard Smith Sr.
Leon’s family later moved to Joliet, Illinois where he was raised and educated. At the age of 16, Leon received confirmation at the church of St. Mary Carmelite Fathers.
Leon served in the Unites States Army in 1969 and received an honorable discharge. He was awarded sharpshooter status as a M-14 and M-16 expert and received a National Defense Service Medal.
Leon was a motorcycle enthusiast and was a founding member of the Brothers of Soul Motorcycle Club. Due to failing health, he became an honorary member.
Leon was employed by Mobil Oil Refinery for 26 years as a Fire and Safety Inspector Instructor. Leon was awarded many certificates and was licensed by the State of Illinois s an EMT.
Leon leaves to cherish his memory; his loving and caring wife, Carolyn D. Smith; his children, Leon Smith III, Mary (Charles) Smith of Texas, Candace (Brien) Greenwood of Joliet, IL and Billy Fulgham of Louisiana; one brother, Terry Smith of California; sister-in-law, Lizzie Smith of Tennessee; grandchildren, Ja’Nyiah, A’Miyah, Leon IV, Mikells, Ashley, Cameron, Jaylyn, Taylor, Jackson and Brien; great grandchildren Karim, Kelaya, Jordyn and Araya and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
