Leroy Stevens Obituary

Leroy Stevens, age 85, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026. He was born on September 15, 1940, in Terry, Mississippi, to the late Rosie and Willie Stephens.

Leroy’s early life was marked by both talent and promise. As an exceptional high school basketball player, he earned a scholarship opportunity that could have led him far. However, guided by a deep sense of responsibility and dedication, he chose instead to build a stable and hardworking life. He began a distinguished 30-year career as a machine operator with Caterpillar, where he was known for his pride, reliability, and strong work ethic.

In addition to his career, Leroy worked alongside his father, Willie Stephens, affectionately known throughout Joliet as “The Paper Man.” Together with his brothers, Leroy provided residential and business services to the community for many years. Their work became a meaningful part of Joliet’s local history and stood as a lasting testament to the strength and unity of their family.

Leroy will be remembered for his deep love of family, his enjoyment of bowling, and his vibrant personality. He had a gift for bringing joy to others and was truly the life of every gathering. His laughter, warmth, and energy left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him.

Leroy was united in marriage to Francine Dorris Stevens for seventeen years, and to this union two children were born: Kim and Jeffrey (who preceded him in death).

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Kim; his sons, Devontae and Antoine; his daughter, Crystal; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six siblings: Charles, Eloise, Quentin, Syrron, Taquana, and Uquay. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rosie and Willie Stephens; his son, Jeffrey Stevens; and his brothers, Robert, Ramon, Jimmy, and Willie.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his devoted caregiver, Rochelle, and offers special appreciation to his loving daughter, Kim, for her unwavering care and support.

Leroy’s legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will continue to shine brightly through the generations he leaves behind.
