Lettye Jewel Thompson was born on December 11, 1939, in Grandfield, Oklahoma, to Rev. Nathaniel James Sr. and Carrie James. She peacefully departed this world on December 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unshakable faith.
As the daughter of a pastor, Lettye grew up with a vibrant spirit, excelling as a majorette and basketball player at Duncan High School in Oklahoma. On May 13, 1962, she married her dedicated partner and friend, L.C. Thompson Jr., and together they built a home filled with love and music, raising four sons: Anthony, Alan/Mel, Aaron, and Greg. Seeing her sons grow into strong, kind, and honorable men was one of Lettye’s greatest sources of pride.
Lettye’s devotion didn’t stop at her immediate family—it extended to the entire James and Thompson families. Her bond with her brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews was filled with laughter, support, and deep-rooted pride. Lettye carried immense pride for all the kids who grew up in the Spencer Highland neighborhood. She believed in their potential, celebrated their achievements, and saw greatness in every one of them.
She dedicated over 25 years of care and compassion to Silver Cross Hospital’s OB/GYN department, impacting countless families. Outside of work, Lettye was a fierce competitor in BINGO, earning her the title of the “G.O.A.T” in the Chicagoland area.
In 1988, Lettye became the “Momager” of the music group The 17th Floor, guiding them to tour globally and perform alongside stars like TLC and Usher.
In her final chapter, her son Mel became her rock, ensuring she wanted for nothing. With love and commitment, he cared for her every want and need, creating a space of peace, dignity, and joy.
Lettye was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Nathaniel James Sr. and Carrie James, and her siblings: Bernice Brown, Erma Jean Brown, Maethaniel White, Lauretta Brand, Katherine Carr, and N.H. James Jr. She is survived by her siblings, Bishop Leonard James (Linda), Joyce Brown (Maurice), Diane Ellis, and Patsy Martin (Otis), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who adored her.
She leaves behind to carry her legacy her beloved husband, L.C. Thompson Jr.; her sons, Anthony (Kolanda), Mel, Aaron (Bia), and Greg (Tiffany); her cherished grandchildren, Danurris, Tujuana, Anthony Jr., Tony, Sumiyah, Tevin, Raquel, and Isaiah; and her great-grandchildren TaLiyah and TJ.
Lettye’s life was a testament to faith, love, and joy. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
We invite all who loved her to join us as we honor the incredible life of a woman who gave so much to so many. Let us come together to celebrate her memory and the profound impact she had on all of our lives.
