Margaret Pickett Obituary

Margaret (Brookins) Pickett was born on October 31, 1922 in Meridian, Mississippi to the late Sam and Addie (Jack) Brookins. She was the eighth of fourteen children and the second of four daughters. Nurtured by a Christian family, she accepted Christ at an early age.

Margaret was the first in her family to graduate from college and she was one of the first graduates of Governors State University where she earned her Master’s Degree in Education. Margaret received her training and obtained years of experience as a primary school teacher. She then found and operated a chain of day care centers named Margery Daw for over 35 years in Bellwood and Maywood, Illinois.

On December 11, 2017, the Mayor of Bellwood hand delivered to her home a proclamation in recognition of her life achievements to the community through her day care centers. Margaret always expressed the importance of education to the many children that she encountered. And she always had a special place in her heart for those in need. She always found the time to extend a helping hand or provide words of encouragement.

Margaret passed away peacefully on Monday, August 23, 2021.

Margaret was preceded in death by nine brothers, Sherman, John, Richard, Howard, Sherrod, Bill, Sam Jr., Nathaniel and Henry; and two sisters, Johnnie Trotter and Addie Reatha Logan.

Margaret leaves to cherish her memories: one sister, Rosetta Flowers; one brother, Lamar; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
