Maria Currie Obituary

Maria Antionette Currie was born December 25, 1962, in Joliet, Illinois to Donald Barber (deceased) and Diane Currie. She was called to rest on March 8, 2024, where she passed peacefully at home surrounded by her children and several grandchildren.

A lifelong resident of Joliet, Maria attended the Joliet public schools. She later attended Everest College in Westmont, Illinois where she became a certified Medical Assistant. She also obtained education in the field of Applied Science as a paralegal.

Maria was a family-oriented woman who loved God first. She loved her children and grandchildren. While diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, until she could no longer do so,

Maria worked tirelessly to provide for and make sure her children were well taken care of. She also extended that love to other children as well. Maria was a faithful and loyal friend. She always placed the needs of others before herself.

Maria was a woman of many talents. One of her greatest achievements was to have the privilege of authoring a book with a group of women telling their individual stories. A woman who kept up with the latest fashion, Maria was well groomed and loved to shop. She was an excellent homemaker as was seen in how she decorated her home and the wonderful meals she cooked. In her free time, Maria loved to read, skate, bowl, and work on crossword puzzles.

Maria accepted Christ at an early age and remained faithful to the things of God. She loved music with a passion singing in church and school choirs. She took piano, organ, and clarinet lessons. She would write stories and sing them to entertain her friends. Although dealing with an illness for 34 years, with the strength of God’s grace and mercy, she “fought the good fight of faith” to the very end.

Maria was preceded in death by her father and stepmother, Donald and Susie Barber; oldest daughter, Akiya Egeston; former husband, Ado D. Autman III.; paternal and maternal grandparents; brother, Donald White; sister, Cynthia Brewer; nephews, Johnathan Brewer, Tony Johnson and Jerie McClellan; granddaughter Ge’Ni Currie; and special friends, Kathy Amos and Andy Cole. Maria leaves to cherish her memories: four brothers, Vincent Currie (Carbondale, IL), Shadon (Tanya) Barber (Bolingbrook, IL), Antoine Mitchell (Joliet), DeAndre Fuller, (Joliet), Ankoma Mitchell (Cobb County, GA.): two sisters, Lisa Cooper and Carmen Cooper both Cobb County, GA.; three sons, Gentry Currie, Ado D.
