Mary Virginia Owens was born December 2, 1927 in Cuba, Alabama. She was the second child of 11 children born to the union of Frank and Orlena Thomas who preceded her in death, along with her siblings; Willie F. Thomas, James Thomas, Ray Thomas, Sylvester Thomas, Willie L. Thomas, Ola V. Bryant, Attie R. Thomas-Burks, and Mary Ann Stevenson.
Mary acknowledged her faith in Jesus Christ at a young age on the profession of her faith, she was baptized. Mary was married to M.K. Portia for 18 years whom preceded her in death. Mary a devoted wife and mother of two children, Robert Earl Portia and Frankie Portis-Gladney whom preceded her in death.
After many years of being a single parent, Mary was introduced to Maurice Owens. They fell in love and was married for many years. She was a devoted wife, taking care of her husband and mother with the assistance of her brother, and sister until they departed this life.
Mary's home was an "open door" most of her siblings who relocated to Chicago lived with her until they were able to establish themselves.
Mary was a long time member of Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. H.B. Brady where she served faithfully in various capacities as Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School where she executed delicious meals, Co-Captain of the Tribe of Israel and a loyal choir member. In later years, she joined Christ Temple Cathedral Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Lindsey and Pastor Winn where she attended Sunday school regularly until she was unable to do so.
Mary was a God fearing woman who exemplified the characteristics of Proverbs 31:10 "who can find a virtuous woman."
At age 98, Mary made her transition peacefully on December 7, 2025 surrounded by her devoted, loving brother, Elijah and sister-in-law, Sharon whom she met over 55 years ago.
Mary's memories will forever be cherished by her siblings; Elijah Thomas (Sharon), Annie Washington (Joshua); grandchildren, Marcus Portis, Terrance Gladney, Jeffery Portis, a longtime friend, Rita Wright of 61 years, and a host of nieces, and nephews, also not forgetting her dog, Mickey of 13 years.
