Michelle Antionette Weithers, a radiant beacon of love, wisdom, and compassion, born on September 13, 1962, in Joliet, IL, entered the realm of eternity on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. As Walt Whitman once expressed, "The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse." Michelle not only contributed a verse, but she composed an entire symphony of kindness and love that will echo through the ages.
Michelle was a devoted teacher at Catholic Charities Head Start, where she ignited the spark of curiosity and learning in her young students. Her classroom was a vibrant space where every child found acceptance and encouragement. She believed in the potential of each child, and her dedication to their growth was unwavering. Michelle's extraordinary ability to connect with her students and her unwavering belief in their potential made her not just a teacher, but a mentor, guide, and friend. "A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops. Michelle's influence, undoubtedly, will continue in the lives of the many children she touched.
Michelle accepted Christ into her life at an early age and was a faithful and devoted member of St. Mark C.M.E Church where she followed her Mother’s footsteps and served on the Usher Board for many years.
Michelle was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Helen and Elbert Washington and spiritual sister, Tahshia Hogan. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Ryauna Jelks (Robert Jelks), to whom she passed down her love for learning, her joyous spirit, and her compassionate heart. Michelle's love for her daughter was immense, and her legacy lives on with her; one sister, Karla Weithers; one brother, Mitchell (Dino) Weithers; nephew, Minister Marcus Jones (Jasmine Jones); niece, Kayla Williams (Kaiden and Kylie Booker and Kodaa and Krillyn Williams). Her beloved Goddaughters, Cabria Griffin; CoSharvia Poe; DaeJa Creal; Alexis Griggly; Godson, Jace Autman all of Joliet, IL and numerous cousins, dear friends and colleagues.
As the poet Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Michelle made everyone feel loved, valued, and special.
