Neva A. Hughes

Neva Ann “Nene” Hughes was born on March 4, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Augusta Sr. and Gerdean “Jeanne” Hughes.  She was raised with strong family roots and spiritual influence, attending church in her early years with matriarchal grandparents at Shafer Chapel in Harvey, Illinois, a church founded by her family.

Nene began her education in Harvey, Illinois.  Later on in her life the Hughes family moved to Robbins, IL where she attended H.L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, IL.  She went on to work at Van Leer Containers for many years, where she was known for dedication, strength and strong worth ethics.

Nene found the love for softball where she proudly played third base for the Raiderettes Women’s Softball teams; where she was recognized as one of the best third basemen.  She truly loved the game/sisterhood.  But more than anything, she loved/cherished her family.

Nene found her “greatest” love and happiness with Mr. Jesse Hayes with over 50 years of devoted love with her lifelong companion whom remained by her side until the night she gained her wings.  She also played a significant role in the lives of her nieces and nephews.  Nene didn’t have any biological children, nor grandchildren, but if you weren’t there to bear witness, this part of her life, you would’ve thought she had her own.  “Iykyk”!  Because she took on these roles with; Joy, “Joshua” Hanley, Brianna, Ja’maree, Tamara, Da’nae, Ja’myara, Joshua Jr., Mikia, Jayden as her children and Zuri, Ty and Royalty as her grandchildren.

On March 10, 206 at 8:45PM, Neva Ann Hughes was called home to gain her wings to join both parents, Augusta Sr. and Gerdean Hughes; three sisters, Andrea, Jeanette and Lilly; two brothers, Vincent and Kevin; and a brother whom was stillborn.

She leaves to cherish her memories with her loving brothers, Augusta Jr., William and Randall Hughes, all of Harvey, Illinois; her loving sisters, Rhonda and Debra Hughes, also of Harvey, Illinois.  Nene leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews and family members; three dear friends,  Thelma Orchibald, Beverly Lewis and Theresa Mayes whom all loved her dearly and will forever hold her close to their hearts; and a bonus niece, Dezja Thomas.
