Farrell Lydell (Dell) Matthews was born on December 13, 1940 to Jessie and Stinson Matthews. Dell grew up and attended school in both Springhill, Tennessee and Chicago, Illinois. Although he settled in Chicago, he developed life-long relationships with family and friends in Tennessee and frequently traveled to visit them.
He married Anna Bell and was the father of four children. His wife and two daughters, Theresa and Marie, preceded him in death. He worked for the City of Chicago, Housing Services for over
thirty years until his retirement. During that time, he received numerous citations for his excellent work. He was known for his business savvy and enterprising spirit. He was devoted to his
family. His family lovingly describes him as "frugal", but he was generous with his time, often sharing his knowledge on a wide range of subjects.
A wonderful life ended on January 1, 2025, when Dell was taken from us. He endured his illness for many years, holding on with the determination that had characterized him. After so much
suffering by Dell, the Lord called him home. We know Dell is at rest.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Darrell Matthews of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Darwin Sanders of Chicago, Illinois; three granddaughters, Victoria, Vanessa, Phyllis, all of
Minneapolis, Minnesota; three sisters, Melonie Purnell of Harvey, Illinois, Sandra Milton of Buford, Georgia, Margaret (Marvin) Gray of Joliet, Illinois; three brothers, Stinson (Janice)
Matthews of Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland (Gwen) Matthews of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kim Purnell of Plainfield, Illinois; a host of niece nephews, cousins and friends.
