Pastor Stephen Deloney Obituary

Reverend Stephen Derek Deloney was born on December 1, 1963.  He was the youngest of eleven children born to the late J.D. and Nina (Fraizer) Deloney.

He attended the Gary School Systems, going on to attend Indiana University - Northwest and Purdue University - Calumet Region.

Reverend Deloney would tell everyone (at every opportunity) that on May 19, 2007, he was married to his rose, Gyra Alexander, whom he plucked from God’s special garden.  They have one son, Umoja “Jamal” Alexander.

Reverend Deloney accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 14.  He started his ministry at the age of 17 at Israel C.M.E.  Church in Gary, IN under the pastorate of Reverend Carrell K. Cargle Sr.  On May 29, 1980, Reverend Deloney started ministry at Israel C.M.E. Church in Gary, IN.  He was presented his Exhorter and Local Preacher license two years later by the Presiding Elder Harry L. Redds in 1982.

Reverend Deloney started the W.C. Wesson Mission July 1986, and served there until July 1991.  He served as pastor of St. Paul C.M.E. Church (Benton Harbor, MI), July 1991 to July 1992. He was next assigned to Allen Chapel C.M.E. Church, Gary, IN July 1992 to July 1999. While serving as pastor at Allen Chapel, he also worked full time as a Family Counselor at Geminus Head Start XXI from 1995 to 1999. Reverend Deloney was assigned to St. Mark C.M.E. Church (Joliet, IL) from 1999 to 2019 (20 years).  Allen Chapel welcomed him back home August 2019.  During his time in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Reverend Deloney has served as President of the Gary District Ministerial Alliance, Assistant Dean for the Michigan-Indiana Region Leadership Training School.  He served on the Committee on Ministerial Examination, the Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Third Episcopal District of the C.M.E. Church.  He served all his assigned churches, district, and regional positions faithfully. After 40 years of serving Him wholeheartedly, on May 29, 2020, God has called His angel home.

Reverend Deloney was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jo Ella Giles; and his brothers, Edwin G. Deloney and Darrell S. Deloney.

Reverend Deloney leaves to cherish his precious memory: his loving wife, Gyra D. Deloney; his son, Umoja Jamal Alexander; brothers, J.D. (Diane) Deloney Jr. of Brooklyn Park, MN; Everett (Leslie) Deloney of Burlington, NC; sisters, Barbara (John) Ross, Darlene P. Deloney, Beverly (Virgil) Mitchell, Yvonne Deloney, and Bonita (Robert) Jenkins, all of Gary, IN; god-brother, James (Myrna) Cooks of Fort Washington, MD; and son in the gospel, Marcus Jones of Joliet, IL. He also has a host of nephews and nieces, numerous other relatives, and friends.
