Robert L. Johnson

Robert "Rocky Man" Johnson was born on November 29, 1943, in Tunica, Mississippi to the late Mr. & Mrs. Andrew and Martil Johnson. 

Rocky Man confessed faith in Christ at an early age and became a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, MS under the leadership of Pastor W. M. Fox. 

Mr. Robert Johnson worked at U.S Steel where he later retired after 30 years. He spent his life in the Brothers of Soul Motorcycle Club, riding motorcycle and traveling. His passion was making his family and friends laugh, and he also loved to dance. If you knew him very well, you knew he could catch him a beat. Meaning Rocky Man would normally start dancing before the record started, “he would say the record better catch up with me".  Shaking his shoulder, crooked hips and crooked leg. Rocky Man also thought he was very good looking; Liz would say he was good looking and so fine, and we would fall out laughing. He probably was in his younger days, either that or it was all in his mind. If you knew him, you knew his favorite quote to say was “sho nuff”, which was one of his mother’s favorite quotes to say too. Rocky Man was a people person and didn’t let things bother him, he joked about all situations, no matter if they were positive or negative. When he got in trouble with his wife Liz, he would always tell us that he was going to be in the doghouse tonight. We would ask him, Rocky Man what you gone do, he would say that dog better get on over cause I’m coming in tonight.

Rocky Man cherished and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, family, friends, neighbors and especially his brothers. When he got together with his brothers, it was like nobody else in the world even existed but them Johnson boys. Rocky Man was very well known throughout this community and other parts of the United States, especially “The Motorcycle National Roundup, The Brothers of Soul of Joliet, IL, Thunder Wheels of Joliet, IL, Thumpers of Memphis, TN, The Rough Riders of Cleveland, MS, and The Flying Eagles of Cleveland, MS”.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Martil and Andrew Johnson: and his lovely wife, Lizzie P. Johnson of 50 years as we affectionally called her Liz: and preceded him in death his son, Ray Johnson, Randy Johnson, first wife, Shirley May Johnson and his brothers, Jack Parker and Bosey “TT Tag” Johnson. 

In his own way and for his own purpose on September 21, 2024, God reached down into our midst and called the spirit of our beloved Robert “Rocky Man” Johnson home to be with Him throughout eternity. 

He leaves to cherish his memory: his sons, Robert Earl Johnson and Randy Jones; his brothers, TJ Johnson of Tupelo, MS, Willie Johnson (Rosie) and Bobbie Johnson (Jenice) of Joliet, IL, Leroy Johnson (Judy) and Andrew Johnson III of Memphis, TN, and Dan Johnson of California: sisters, Lillie Clark of Frisco, TX, Essie Taylor, Lula Johnson, Ethel Diggs, all of Chicago, IL: 11 grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who he loved and cherished very dearly.
