Robert “Billy” Davis Obituary

Life and Legacy of Robert Lee Davis
Affectionately known as “Billy”

Robert Lee Davis, lovingly known as “Billy,” was born on November 21, 1945, in Cairo, Illinois, to the late Mack C. Davis and Eva M. Davis. On April 3, 2026, he peacefully answered the call of the Lord, declaring, “I’m going home to be with the Lord.”

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal and maternal grandparents; two sisters, Alice M. West and Joyce M. Davis; one brother, Joe M. Davis; and his great-granddaughter, J-Lynn Littrice.

Robert received his education in Joliet, Illinois, where he graduated from Joliet Central High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1964 to 1967 during the Vietnam Era. While stationed in Europe, he specialized in anti-aircraft missile operations.

At an early age, Robert accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Union Grove Baptist Church in Cairo, Illinois, under the leadership of Rev. Hula Vaughn at the age of six. He later became a devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Isaac Singleton Sr.

Robert faithfully served in numerous ministries, including Deacon, Men’s Choir and President of Men’s Prostate Screenings. He was actively involved in the Men’s Ministry, Promise Keepers, Lebanon Laymen, and extended his ministry beyond the church by mentoring and supporting both young and elder men. He also served as a trusted armor bearer and caretaker to Dr. Isaac Singleton Sr. during and after his pastoral tenure.

A passionate advocate for his community, Robert received both state and national recognition for his leadership in addressing environmental safety concerns impacting the Lincoln Heights community. He traveled to Washington, D.C., where he met with legislators and representatives of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency on multiple occasions.

Robert was a dedicated member of JACOB (Joliet Alliance of Churches), an organization committed to advocating for justice and providing support for those in need of legal representation. He was also an associate member of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, where he received a Community Service Award, and a proud member of the Buffalo Soldiers Post 241.

For over 20 years, Robert extended his service to others by providing transportation for individuals traveling to airports, train stations, hospitals, and various destinations throughout the Chicago area and beyond.

Robert had a deep love for sports, including basketball, football, baseball, and track. He was especially passionate about golf and was a dedicated member of Joliet’s first Black golf club, the “Sweet Swingers,” where he earned numerous trophies and awards.

Throughout his career, Robert held several positions, including employment with U.S. Steel and served as a Sergeant with the Illinois Department of Corrections. He later retired from Johnson & Johnson Personal Products.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Carolyn F. Davis; daughters, Yolanda Terrell, ReShawn (Tyler) Howard, and Brittany (Sal) Guzman; sons, Kevin Short and Darien Davis; and blended family, Regina (Joe) Davis, Erica Bell, and Reginald (Linda) Alexander. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara J. Williams; brother, Ronald (Kristy) Davis; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Willie) Harris and Gwendolyn Alexander; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

He also leaves behind a special cousin, Reverend Claude (Petrula) Shelby, Pastor Emeritus of Salem Baptist Church in Champaign, Illinois; lifelong brothers, James Brown, Early Deloach, Pastor HoseaHines, and Sam Mitchell; and special friends in ministry, Pastor Perry Bennett and Reverend Victor Roland.

Robert’s life was a testament to faith, service, leadership, and love. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
