Roosevelt Hughes Sr.

Roosevelt “Mann” Hughes Sr. was born on January 12, 1950, in Joliet, Illinois, to Eugene Hughes and Hattie Draine-Steed.

Roosevelt accepted Christ at Mt. Ebal Missionary Baptist Church in Lockport, Illinois, under the leadership of Pastor Cornell Ervins. His faith remained an important part of his life.

He attended Fairmont Elementary School and graduated from Lockport High School, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. Following high school, Roosevelt dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Lockport Highway Commission, retiring after a long and faithful career. He loved driving the trucks and especially looked forward to snowy days, when he could help keep the roads clear for his community.

Roosevelt peacefully departed this life on June 19, 2026, in Lockport, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his biological father, Eugene Hughes; his stepfather, Abe Steed Sr.; his mother, Hattie Draine-Steed; his special aunt and uncle, Ethel and Cleveland Miles, who lovingly helped raise him; his sisters, Betty Coleman and Emma McNair; and his brothers, Lavernis Hughes and Abe Steed Jr.

Roosevelt leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 55 years, Mary Hughes; his seven children: Michelle Davenport, Felecia (Jerome) Hall, Aquenetta (Terrance) Wright, Kimberly Hughes, Rosalind Hughes, Octavia Hughes, and Roosevelt Hughes Jr.; his brother, Wayne (Sandra) Hughes; his sister, Yvonne Reed, both of Joliet, Illinois; 17 beloved grandchildren; 15 treasured great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; and his special friend, Roger Gates.

Roosevelt was loved by many and never hesitated to open his home and heart to those in need. He found joy in fishing, tending to his garden, and, above all, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His kindness, generosity, and love for his family will forever be remembered.
