Early Life
Sam was born on November 3, 1946, in Kumasi, Ghana, to John Andrew and Beatrice Gyenfie (Acquah), and baptized at the Wesley Methodist Church (now Wesley Cathedral) in Adum, Kumasi. His parents instilled in him values of hard work, integrity, and compassion, which he carried throughout his life.
Journey to Joliet
Sam eventually established his life in Joliet, Illinois, where he lived until he departed this world. He found a community that embraced him and became the foundation for his many cherished memories.
Love, Family and Friends
Sam met Karen, his soul mate and the love of his life, and in 1985 they were married. Their union was blessed with a beautiful bond that stood the test of time. Together, they raised a daughter, Ekua. Sam cherished his role as a father, and a grandfather to his beloved grandchildren Khalani, Khalid and Jaythan.
Beyond this, Sam's love extended to several brothers and sisters, countless nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His warmth and kindness created lasting relationships, making him deeply loved and admired by all who knew him.
He was a man of few words who had a passion for helping others, and as many have attested over, and over again, their lives were forever changed for the good of having known and encountered him. Sam’s infectious laughter still resonates in our midst. At his best, and at the very center of his soul, was his deep God-inspired generosity, and an open genuineness to forgive and forget all. Sam was a giver and wanted to give it all away; his resources and his time to help others, so in effect to invest in everyone he met and tried to assist, most especially his friends and his family.
Education and Career
Sam earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His career was one of dedication and expertise, during the periods he worked for Travelers Insurance and HartFord AIG as an Engineering Inspector. His professionalism led him to earn State Inspector Licenses in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
Though he retired from work early due to ill health, Sam's resilience and determination defined his approach to life's challenges. He faced difficult circumstances with grace and continued to inspire those around him.
A Legacy of Love and Admiration
Sam's life is a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and generosity. He leaves behind his beloved wife Karen, his daughter Ekua (Matt), his grandchildren, several brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews, and other extended family who all carry forth his spirit in their hearts, a true legacy of cherished memories and deep affection!
Sam was a man loved and cherished by many. He will be deeply missed but remembered as a beacon of hope and strength. His life was a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
