Sandra Gooch Obituary

Sandra Gooch-Knight was born June 21, 1962 in Water Valley, Mississippi to the late Wesley Gooch Sr. and Hazel Gooch.  She was a long-term resident of Joliet, Illinois for many years. She sadly departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at the age of 61 surrounded by her loving family.

Sandra accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Pastor Wright at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church on Patterson Road.  She attended St. Paul from the time she moved to Joliet from Mississippi in 1968, until her death.  She was a very devoted and faithful member of St. Paul.  She loved God and always tried her best to attend service whether in person or online.

After moving to Joliet, she would attend McKinley Park Grade School, Dirksen Junior High and Joliet West High School.  During her high school years is when she started to first develop her passion for children.  As a teenager, she would babysit her older siblings’ children as she was the youngest of the family of children.

Her first real job as a teenager was at Ebony Terrance Lounge as an assistant cook.  Later in life she would go on to do volunteer work at the Head Start Program, where she fully developed her passion for childcare.  After graduation of high school, she would meet the love of her life, Ronnie “Tojoe” Knight.  They were together for 41 years; had three children and enjoyed life.  She spent her entire life serving others and taking care of children whether her own or others in the family or in the surrounding community.  Everyone around knew that if you came over to their house, you would have a place to sleep and eat, and you would be loved as one of their own.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing games with the kids and teaching them and helping them learn and showing love to all.  She loved playing many different board games, scrabble, dominos, euchre, and a typical word search.  She also enjoyed watching different reality and Hallmark and Lifetime television shows.  But most of all, she enjoyed the happiness and enjoyment of seeing children happy.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Ronnie Knight Sr.; her parents, Wesley Sr. and Hazel Gooch; one child, Ronnell Roneick Knight; four brothers, George D. Gooch, Johnny L. Gooch Sr., Thomas E. Gooch and Charles Gooch; two sisters, Hazel L. Gooch and Gladys M. Gooch; two grandchildren; five nephews and two nieces.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her children, Markus Durham, Ronnie Knight Jr., Jason Gooch, Sharhondra Knight and De’Shaunell Knight; three sisters, Mary Gooch, Betty Gooch, and Alice Gooch; one brother, Wesley (Maxine) Gooch; 17 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews, along with other family and friends and one special adopted son, Alan Smith.

She will always be known as “Aunt San” to all that knew her.
