Obituary

Shirley Jean was born in Chicago, IL on September 3, 1937, to the union of Henry Cage Oden-Riggins Sr. and Mary Purvis Riggins. Shirley was the oldest of three children. Her brother Cage Oden-Riggins (deceased) and sister,Joyce Oden-Riggins Fields (deceased).  

Shirley professed her faith at the age of 12 and was baptized at the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the late Arlander C. Mitchell. 

Shirley attended Shoop Elementary School and Morgan Park High School in Morgan Park.  She met and married Matthew Carter Jr. and to this union one child, La Sharon Renee Carter was born.

Shirley worked for 5 years at Spiegels and 37 years for the Chicago Public Schools.  Retiring after 15 years from Price Elementary School.  She also was a licensed foster parent for 22 years with Lutheran Child and Family Services.

Shirley leaves her daughters, LaSharon and Cynthia Carter; two grandsons, Cornelius Julian Carter (deceased) and Kamari Carter; granddaughter, Asha Caldwell; bonus daughter, Bertha Caldwell; two godsons,Reverend Festus Johnson (Janice) and their son Festus III, sister-in-law, Janie Riggins (California); nieces, Crystal Lewis (Sam), Yolanda Lu (Steve); Tracy Fields; nephews Garry Odenand DaMone (Kyran) Riggins; great nieces and nephews, Robert, Raven, Deana and Tyrone Riggins; great greats, Oden-Riggins and McGinnis cousins; James McGinnisand close friends; Shelton Flowers (bonus son).
