“A Race Well Run”
With deep love, we celebrate the remarkable life of Steven Edward Battle, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal brother, mentor, friend, and man of unwavering faith and service.
Born to the late Edward and Beather Battle, Steven’s journey began in Chicago, where his early brilliance and vibrant personality began to shine. He attended grammar school in Chicago and Mississauga, ON. Steven graduated from Gordon Tech High School, where he set a legacy in motion—literally. Representing Gordon Tech in 1989, Steven soared into history with a long jump of 7.43585 meters (24-4¾), a Class 3A state record in Illinois that still stands today.
Steven continued his education at Blinn College in Texas, where he remained committed to athleticism and academic excellence. Steven continued his academic pursuits at University of Tennessee where he received a full athletic scholarship. Steven graduated from University of Tennessee with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. He took a break from his educational pursuits to commit to Track and Field arena at the professional level- in which- hard work and dedication qualified him for the 1996 olympic trails. Steven’s commitment to educational excellence was evident as he later earned a Master of Science in Network and Communication Management from Devry Institute.
His passion for track and field remained a lifelong calling. As a respected USATF-IL and IHSA track and field official, Steven traveled across the country to serve at meets—most recently officiating the esteemed Texas Relays. He gave countless hours to coaching young athletes with the Illinois Lightning and Illinois Shockers Track Clubs, teaching them discipline, technique, and belief in their ability to achieve their personal best. Under his guidance, many found success on national platforms and received opportunities to compete at the collegiate level.
Steven also mentored across generations and continents, forming lasting bonds with fellow officials and coaches like Mike, Jamero, Kirk, Nichole and the USATF staff and volunteers.
But Steven’s achievements extended far beyond classrooms and track. As a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC. spring 1993 and a dedicated Mason, Steven carried himself with integrity, leadership, and an enduring commitment to serving his community and uplifting others.
Yet, of all the titles Steven carried, “Husband” and “Dad” brought him the most joy. Steven was a proud and present father and grandfather, delighting in their lives.
His incredible love story with Dr. Tonya E. Battle began in November 2014 through an executive matchmaking service. The connection was undeniable—a 99% match. As the matchmaker marveled at their spiritual and personal alignment, Steven lightheartedly declared, “Don’t forget my barber!” That sense of humor—and attention to detail—made every moment with Steven unforgettable.
They met in person on February 15, 2015. That day, he joyfully told Tonya, “I feel like I’ve met my best friend—my Chocolate Drop.” Their relationship blossomed, full of faith, laughter, ballroom dancing, sports debates (Bears vs. Patriots, Cubs vs. Sox), and a shared love for mentoring and ministry. As former Division I athletes, they shared a passion for sports leadership, mentorship, competition and camaraderie. On October 8, 2017, they combined their goals, passions, and dreams; Steven married his best friend and became “Hubby Wrinkles”—a nickname lovingly given by Tonya and inspired by his mother.
Steven’s legacy will never fade. He lives on in every family member, every friend, every athlete he coached, every smile he brought to churchgoers as a greeter at New Covenant Worship Center, every prayer he lifted on the Intercessory Prayer Team, and every moment he spent investing in people with sincerity, strength, and heart. His faith, humor, wisdom, and love echo through the lives he touched.
Steven leaves behind his wife,Tonya; his daughters, Khloe (Kimberly), Kayla, Kendra Battle and MaKyra Williams; stepchildren Whitney, Leah, Sydni Banks and Chastity Smith; grandchild Karson; step grandchildren Trinity, Aaliya, Analise, Aaden, Maria and Kyrie. He also leaves behind his loving brother Gerald (Yolanda); his stepsister Rochanna (Robert); beloved father and mother-in-law, Robert and Gloria Moore; and brother- and sister-in-law, Daryle and Kim Moore, as well as a host of relatives and friends.
