Timothy Ward Obituary

Timothy Earl Ward, affectionately known as “Tim,” was born on May 16, 1953, in Sylvarena, Mississippi, to the late Milton and Alla Ward.

Tim was educated at Turner Chapel and Raleigh High School in Raleigh, Mississippi. He accepted Christ at an early age at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Raleigh, Mississippi, under the leadership of Rev. S. L. Thigpen. Later in life, after moving to Illinois, he continued his walk with the Lord at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Joliet. His faith remained steadfast, even as he faced trials of health and hardship. Though his health declined during his final year, he continued to share his gentle smile and recognize his loved ones, offering warmth and comfort to those around him.

Growing up in rural Mississippi, Tim spent his early years on the family farm, where he quickly became known as an “all-around” young man. He had a natural ability to fix, build, and manage just about anything. Whether feeding livestock, repairing fences, driving tractors, log trucks, or chopping wood, Tim did it all—and he did it well. He was strong, dependable, and always willing to lend a hand. He also had a love for animals, especially horses, and took pride in caring for them.

Beyond the farm, Tim had a competitive streak that made him a force on the football field. He played with intensity, strength, and a determination to win. His tough playing style earned him the respect of both teammates and opponents. Football reflected the way he lived life—steadfast, full of heart, and never afraid to push through challenges.

One summer afternoon, during a fishing trip to the Leaf River with his mother, Alla, their neighbor Mary Helen Dixon, and Mary Helen's daughter, Josephine, a moment of crisis revealed Tim’s quiet bravery. When Josephine, who could not swim, accidentally fell into the river, Tim jumped into the water without hesitation and pulled her to safety. He was a skilled swimmer and stayed calm under pressure. Out of concern for alarming their parents, the children agreed to keep the incident to themselves until years later, when Josephine shared the story. That act of courage remained tucked away for decades, a quiet example of Tim’s selflessness.

As he grew older, Tim brought that same discipline and dedication into his working life. He spent many years employed by the Smith County Board of Supervisors in Raleigh, Mississippi, and later worked for Material Services in Lockport, Illinois. He was committed to doing his job well, no matter the task.

In February of 1981, Tim faced a life-altering moment when he was involved in a serious car accident that left him in critical condition and resulted in a permanent disability. It was a difficult chapter, but Tim met it with quiet resilience and unwavering courage. With the steadfast love and support of his family, he was able to recover from the most critical aspects of his injuries, though he continued to live with the lasting effects for the remainder of his life.

Despite these challenges, Tim never let his condition define him. His strength of spirit, patience, and deep faith carried him through each day. He remained present in the lives of those he loved, offering wisdom, love, and comfort in countless ways. His journey stands as a testament to endurance, the power of family, and the grace with which he approached adversity.

Tim was united in marriage to Linda Griffin, and from their union came two children: Stephanie M. Ward-Harris and Chris Demond Ward. He was also the proud father of Shamiki Alexander, whom he cherished deeply. Tim’s children were the center of his world. Nothing brought him greater joy than being in their presence—whether sharing a laugh or simply spending time together. His face lit up when they entered the room, and his pride in them was apparent to anyone who knew him. He supported their dreams, celebrated their achievements, and gave them his quiet strength and unwavering love. In their company, he found joy, comfort, and a sense of purpose that defined so much of his life.

On Tuesday evening, July 2, 2025, at 8:00 p.m., Timothy Earl Ward peacefully transitioned at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Illinois.
