Tommie Stone was born on September 16, 1942 to parents, Dora Mae Shipp and Tommy Lee Shipp, in Tunica, MS and was the eldest of nine children. She would later go on to meet her husband, Charles Stone Jr., have six beautiful children, and build a life and family in Joliet, IL.
Tommie Stone, also known as “Momma Stone” (to all those who knew and loved her), was not just a mother to her six children, but quickly became the neighborhood mother who shared her love and kindness through the power of a home cooked meal. Everyone understood that to receive her love meant a few things: One, you might have to face her tough love when you were in trouble; Two, her home was a place of solace and comfort; And three, you’d never leave with an empty stomach.
Tommie embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength, and an unending generosity that could be seen in her care for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless others. She had a big heart, a vibrant spirit, and accepted everyone with an open heart, open arms, and a loving smile. Even at the end, she still found ways to laugh and enjoy her remaining days with her loved ones. To know her was to love her.
Tommie is survived by her six children, Willie Dotson, Karry Dotson (Leroy Head), Otis Stone (Anne Stone), Shirley Edwards, Charles Stone (Brenda Stone), Cynthia Hicks (Victor Hicks); her brother, Larry Shipp (of Memphis, TN); and sisters, Clara Bonner and Louise Maiden (of Memphis, TN).
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dora Mae Shipp; her father, Tommy Lee Shipp; her brothers, Clarence “Shorty” Shipp, Curtis “Head” Shipp, Loyd “Mickey” Martin, Victor Lee Shipp; and sister, Christine Shipp. She also leaves to cherish her memory her 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
While her departure was expected, it still comes as a deep wound and is gravely felt by all those who loved her. Our family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time.
We Love You, Granny.
