Tonya Norris Obituary

Tonya Renee Norris was born on December 29, 1955 in Los Angeles, CA, but spent most of her youth and young adult life in Laurel, MS. where she attended Nora Davis Elementary School, graduating from R.H. Watkins High School in 1974 and then taking classes at Jones Junior College. Her first real job was as a receptionist working for Dr. Morrison’s Medical Office near her home. She took pride in developing a professional career and learning new skills. As an adult she moved to Joliet, IL where she briefly worked for Johns Manville before establishing a long term career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sunny Hill Nursing Home where she diligently served for over 30 years. She was also an inspiring leader, serving on committees and as a union steward before retiring in 2010.  

Ms. Norris was a devoted and loving mother providing the perfect balance of compassion and discipline. 

Cooking was a great passion and just another means for her to show her commitment to and desire to nurture her family. Her award winning cornbread dressing was a coveted specialty. She also enjoyed gardening, shopping and traveling, often taking her family on road trips across the country.

Ms. Norris dedicated her life to Christ at a young age and served faithfully as an usher at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She was also a dedicated member of the Caregivers Ministry which provides support for the sick and shut in. She loved helping people and using her many gifts and talents to serve those in need.

Ms. Norris departed this life on March 10, 2024 in Joliet, IL. She leaves to cherish her memory; her children,Ericka Denise Cross, Jermaine Lashay Norris, Eshun Dantonie Norris (Nephew Son),Traneicia Chunnell Ford, Zandrea Qlinique Norris; granddchildren, Dantonie Ford, Reigus (RJ) Cross. Bri’A Norris, Mathius Cross, Jeremiah Norris; siblings, Marcella (Chris) Rhoulac, Ms. Vonda King, Andrea Norris, Stanley (Patsy) Norris, Dwayne Noris, Tachia (Charles) Dace, Lamiko Brown and a special cousin, Beverly Porter; a host of nieces and nephews.

Preceded In death by her mother, (Mahaney Mack Norris); stepfather, (Ernest Norris) and father, (Alton Floyd Brown); sister, (Denise Kelly); brother, Ferman Hyde, as well as a son, Troy’A Norris.
