LOVE
Vastell “Betty” Collins was born on November 24, 1934 to Lauree and Clara Randle in Lexington, MS, both parents preceded her in death. She was the sixth child of eight children. all of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Love led her to the plighting of her troth in holy matrimony to Robert Collins in 1955. This union was blessed with three children: Robert, James, and Paul, Robert preceded her in death. She later married George Lee in 1981, who preceded her in death.
LIFE
Vastell graduated from Mt. Olive Vocational High School on May 20, 1955. She moved to Chicago later that year and married Robert Collins. She began working in a factory and eventually began her own business working as a homemaker. She had many clients that loved her until she retired to care for her grandchildren in 2004.
Vastell confessed a hope in Jesus Christ at an early age at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Lexington, MS. When she moved to Chicago, she became a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Roy Brown, where she served as president of the ushers board. She later changed her membership to Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood, IL under the leadership of Rev. Marvin E. Wiley. She served on the Nurses’ Board and Mothers’ Board until her health began to decline.
Vastell enjoyed raising her kids and grandkids. She would play cards in her spare time. and she loved to cook. She was often found playing her Mahaliah Jackson’s songs on her stereo. She also enjoyed going to various farms in Indiana to pick fresh fruits and vegetables.
Vastell had numerous family and friends that loved her dearly. She never met a stranger and once you met her. she became your “mom” or friend.
LEGACY
On Thursday, September 12. 2024, the Lord dispatched His angels to bring His servant home. she was more than ready to oblige. stating she “lived a good life”. Surviving to keep her memory alive and bid her farewell: two sons, James and Paul (Camille) Collins; five grandchildren: Shavondra. Jessica, Jason, Paul II, and Adam; three great grand-children: Kimbreia, Jasmine, Dayshon; one great-great-granddaughter, Kymbreia; her good friend, Barbara Dunston; and a host of nieces. nephews, and friends.
