Vernon Mayes Obituary

Vernon Mayes was born July 3, 1959 to Eugene and Rose Mayes in Chicago, Illinois.  Vernon was the second oldest of six siblings.  He transitioned his life on February 14, 2021 at his home in Joliet, Illinois, surrounded by his loving, devoted wife, Linda Faye and his loving family by his side.

In 1981 Vernon moved from Harvey, IL to Joliet, IL. Vernon married his childhood sweetheart, Linda Faye Bishop in 1989.  From their union, they had three wonderful sons.

Vernon worked as a Laborer at the Water Treatment Plant in Joliet.  He also worked at Barton Carroll’s Appliance store on Cass Street in Joliet.

Vernon was a family man with a big heart who enjoyed spending time with his family whom he dearly loved.  He was known for his phenomenal cooking and would open his kitchen to anyone who stopped by.  There was no such thing as a stranger to Vernon who opened his heart and home to everyone and embraced them with love.  Vernon loved everyone and everyone loved and respected him.  He played a major role in the lives of countless family members and friends.

Throughout Vernon’s life, he encouraged and inspired so many people.  His energy and spirit lit up the room. He was a man of his word, if he says he would do something for you, he would. The way he loved was genuine, that’s who he was.

Vernon was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Mayes, brothers, Samuel and Ronald Mayes, and sister Beatrice Hanne.

Vernon leaves to cherish his wonderful memory to his devoted and loving wife of 31 plus years, Linda Faye Mayes.  Vernon is survived by his father: Eugene Mayes of Joliet, IL; his three sons: Vernon Bishop of Kailua Kona Hawaii; Jermaine Bishop of Rockford, IL; and Charles (Kathleen) Bishop of Joliet, IL.  His siblings: Andrew (Monty) Mayes and Eugene (Beygene) Mayes; his nine grandchildren, Breanna Bishop, Ebony Hayne, Pajeunique Bishop, Vernon Valentino Bishop, Dwayne Parrish, Steven Charles Shepherd, Tia Shepherd, Trey Shepherd, Kayanna Bartlett and one Great-grandchild, Trinity Terry.

Vernon also leaves behind his special sister-in-laws: Consuela Bishop, Whensday Mayes, and Irene Mayes and a host of Nieces, Nephews, relatives and friends.
