Gilbert Harris was born August 3, 1939 in Joliet, Illinois to Clinton and Argell Harris. He was the youngest of eight children. On October 1, 2017, he departed his earthly life in Salem Village Nursing & Rehab, Joliet, Illinois. Gilbert grew up in Joliet and graduated from Joliet Central Township High School where he was an outstanding athletic in track and basketball. Upon graduation, Gilbert became employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company, where he worked for 30 years. During his employment at Caterpillar, he built many lasting friendships of every persuasion. He loved all of God’s Children. Gilbert will be missed, and remembered as a humble, kind, unselfish man that helped others. He loved talking with people and he met no strangers. Gilbert accepted Christ at an early age, joined All Nations Church of God in Christ, where he was later ordained as Deacon under the leadership of Bishop Robert R. Sanders. Here, Deacon Gilbert Harris continued his giving ways. He was a dedicated Christian, a loyal working member of God’s church: he maintained the grounds, locked and unlocked the church doors, mowed the lawns in blazing sun, and answered “yes” to every call. In August 2014, he was honored and received the All Nations Church of God in Christ “Man of the Year Award”. Deacon Gilbert Harris was preceded in death by: his father, Clinton Harris, mother, Argell Harris (Thigpen), son, Gilbert Harris Jr.:; brothers, Clinton Harris Jr., Daniel Harris, Roosevelt Harris, Sr. (Sandra), Pastor Cornelius Harris (Jessie); sister, Emma Jean Harris and ex-wife, Betty Jean Williams. He leaves his two loving sisters; Louise Carson, Joliet, IL; Margaret Haggler (George), Bellwood, Illinois; a very special friend, Dr. Mattie Dease Barnes; and numerous other friends and relatives to cherish his memory.
